The game of being alive.

During an early morning walk, on the corner of Ventura Ave and Main St in Ventura, Calif., on Saturday, Sep 10, 2011, a shopping cart is abandoned near a stop light. Similarly, we tend to embark certain paths that we might or might not be satisfied with, and if we find that we prefer to go somewhere different, we abandon the old route. Although the route has been abandoned, it is still filled with the life that once occupied it. No matter how much we want to walk away from it, it still defines us to a certain extent. On Main St in Ventura, Calif., on Saturday, Sep 10, 2011, outside of an art studio, a local artist's sculpture is exhibited through the window near a public telephone. Although telephones are a means of human connection, sometimes we purposely choose to ignore those instruments because of our change of directions. In doing this, we might feel separated from our human nature, but it is necessary for our own personal progress. (Photo by Laura Bustillos/Brooks Institute, ©2011)

During the journey of our personal lives, sometimes we are faced only with ourselves and the reflection of the paths we've taken and the ones that we are allowed to take even though we don't know where they will take us. It is always a tough choice, but the responsibility is only ours and it is what keeps us playing the game of being human. (Photo by Laura Bustillos/Brooks Institute ©2011)

As humans, we like to take our time in making decisions, but reality might force us to make immediate decisions that might open certain doors and at the same time close other doors. It is always our choice to take that first step into either one whether we know where we are going or not. That is the adventure of being alive. (Photo by Laura Bustillos/Brooks Institute ©2011)

On the way out of an art studio in downtown Ventura, Calif., on Saturday, Sep 10, 2011. After experiencing series of choices and experiences that darken our journeys, we are able to see that the "light at the end of the tunnel" actually exists. Sometimes we feel kicked around by life's teachings, but when life welcomes us with a party, everything becomes much grander. (Photo by Laura Bustillos/Brooks Institute, ©2011)
